Anyone Can Start a Business

July 08, 2009 | Comments 0

Let’s talk tachlis – there are many fields you can go into that can turn into a successful source of parnossah for your family, without having to go to college. What you go into should be largely dependent on your personality, skill sets, and income potential. I already explained how you should be using this time of the year to discover your hidden talents and polishing them up to turn them into a career.

Here is an example of how an inexperienced kollel guy can start his own business without having to go to college, without needing large sums of seed money, and be up and running within a span of a few months. As a person familiar with the industry, I can attest to the fact that there is a shortage of high quality programmers that speak english and don’t charge a fortune for their services.

If you are a technical oriented person (i.e. the math gemaras get you excited!), you are an excellent candidate for such a business. Learning programming is a matter of reading the right books, fiddling around with a computer, and keeping updated with certain programming geeky websites.

After you know what you are doing, find some people who are looking for some easy programming jobs, and offer to do them for a very low price. But before you do the job for them, sign up for an account on Elance or RentaCoder. Have them post the job they need there, and they should only invite you for a proposal. There you can do the job for them at the agreed upon price (or higher, it doesn’t really matter). Do this a few times, and you’ll have some nice feedback to build on.

Now you can search for projects on those sites and submit bids for them. Make sure you tell the posters that you are an english speaking American with experience, and you will likely get a few jobs per day. Soon, you will be swamped with work, and a business has been born.

Afterwards, you can spread your wings and offer your services to the frum business world, which I can assure you, are always looking for good programmers.

This is just one example of how a kollel guy with “no prospects for income” can start a profitable business soon after leaving kollel without hardly any expenses or any college courses. If you believe it can be done, it will.
