Rabbeim, Stick to What You Are Good At

As the economy trails along, many schools are forced to cut back on their staff of Rebbeim, leaving many of them out of a job.

The only thing more devastating for a Rebbe that is out of a job, is a Rebbe who then takes a job he is not well suited for just because he needs a job.

A Rebbe who is given the pink slip is in an unusually desperate situation. Often times, they are not eligible for unemployment, as their salaries are mainly “off the books”. Most Rebbeim do not have much in the way of retirement savings to cushion them.

Desperation leads a person to act recklessly. How so? A Rebbe, finding himself out of work, will try to get himself a teaching job for what he is really not suited for. A friend of mine recently was laid off from his 2nd Grade Rebbe job. He moved heaven and earth to get a 5th Grade job in another school. Not because he would do well there, and not because he wanted to teach 5th grade. It was simply a means of bringing home a paycheck. Thankfully, he didn’t get the job.

Imagine if a pediatrician lost his job, and the only job available for him was to be a brain surgeon. Would you want this person operating on your brain?

Is your child’s chinuch any different?
