Israeli Kollel Wives Powering Frum Businesses
For years now, U.S. businesses have been outsourcing many of their job overseas, to places like India. The benefit for the company is huge cost savings on labor, while the workers overseas benefit from having a (relatively) well paying job that otherwise wouldn’t be there.
However, there is a huge downside of employing overseas workers, especially those in India. The culture of India is so different. Language is an issue, while they technically speak English, they really don’t. They do things at their own pace, and their own way. Their version of common sense is vastly different than what you expect. Everything, and I mean everything, needs to be spelled out clearly in order for them to get it right. Even after all that, chances are that it won’t be right the first time around.
Enter the hundreds of American born woman who find themselves in Eretz Yisroel while their husbands are spending a few years (or more) learning in kollel. Well paying jobs, especially for women, are hard to come by. But they are talented, speak english, and have the same version of common sense. They actually “get it” the first time.
Citybook Israel realized the opportunity, and took full advantage of it. They now have over 200 english speaking kollel wives, located mostly in Kiryat Sefer, doing all kinds of outsourced work for American companies, with skills from graphic design to data entry. With the internet, an employee is only a few clicks away, whether they are sitting in the next room or across the world. They work during American business hours (which is from 3:00-10:00 PM), and do a great job while earning relatively good money in return.
This is a great opportunity to companies that can benefit from such a setup. They will be getting quality workers at a lower cost, and help support a talmid chochom in kollel by giving his wife a job. A win win situation for everyone.
