Why Are You in Business?

July 27, 2009 | Comments 0

In the long run, selfish people eventually fail. Their reason for being in business has nothing to do with serving their customers. Since they are only in business for themselves, they are doomed to fail.

Everyone is talking about the “CW” who allegedly performed one of the worst acts of mesira in recent history. How a person can stoop so low, is beyond anyone’s comprehension. But looking back to 2006 when his “riches” vanished overnight even during what was then a strong real estate market, now is not such a strange occurrence. A person who is only concerned with himself – so much that he would stoop so low to harm others just to gain some leniency for himself – is surely doomed to fail.

As a kollel yungerman, you know that learning is not just for your own good. Besides the z’chus it imparts on your own family, someone who spends his full days learning knows that he is upholding the world with his Torah. Someone learning Torah is engaged in a true chessed, as the merits of his Torah learning affect the entire Jewish nation and the world.

When entering the business world from kollel, a yungerman should keep the same perspective. Yes, it is OK to try and make money, after all – that is your primary motivation for working. But ultimately, your business or service should be done for the purpose of helping others. A baker provides hungry people with bread, a computer programmer saves people from having to perform complicated and time consuming calculations.

If your motivation for doing business is sincere, not only will you be doing a chessed, but you will also be more successful over the long term. A business that is truly looking out for the good of others will ensure that they have a steady stream of both new and loyal customers, which will in turn keep the business going for many years to come.
