Success Breeds Success
When dealingĀ with “What should I do when I leave Kollel?” – one must take a look at the broad picture in order to be able to see a way out of the problem.
Certainly, this is most likely the number one reason why people stay in kollel, which is also known as “in-kollel by default.” However, using the skills that you acquired through the many years of intense gemara learning, you can dig yourself out of the problem.
Someone who arrives in yeshiva relatively unknown will not be a desirable chavrusah, a source to turn to when something is unclear. However, if after some time he develops a reputation of being just a bit better than average, he will become the one whom others turn to when they want help in their limud. This in turn makes him a desirable chavrusa, which in turn makes him even more confident in his abilities. Success leads to success.
It is exactly the same thing in the working world. When you start out, no one wants to give you the time of day. This is the most discouraging part about going to work. But after breaking through the ice, your business takes a life of its own. Using the same skills you used when you learned, you can outmanouver the competition, gain a foothold in a market, and become an “expert” in your field. This leads to more customers, which give referrals, which leads to even more customers.
It’s not what you do that will determine your success, it’s how you do it. By being just a bit better than the other guy. By working just a little bit harder. By gaining just a little more insight in your field than the competition. And then slowly you find yourself as the expert, full of success that brought about even more success.
Were you just a little bit better in learning than the other guys? I’ll bet you think you were. The world of opportunity is wide open for you. Jump in and succeed!
