if guys learning in yeshiva/kollel got the equivalent of a BA or MA/PHD after a certain length of time and they had to write commentaries or essays etc it might help people be more focused. if there were end of zeman exams/tests so they could actually see if they really understood it and remembered it, that would also focus the mind. especially if they had to get say 75% plus in each test/exam to continue to stay in yeshiva/kollel that would also help.
i believe the current system is unjust to most guys as they don't really shine in kollel and at the same time they don't have jobs or a real focus in their lives.
especially here in E"Y where some guys stay in kollel their whole lives, supported by family/stipend/wives etc, and don't really learn but don't work either.
it's like everyone in the secular world trying to be a professor! it might be comfortable coasting along, like perpetual students do by staying in university half heartedly 'studying for a phd' but not really doing it, but it does noone any favours, least of all the students, and a lot of kollel guys are in the same boat.
they would all be better off both spiritually, emotionally and financially by going out in the real world and getting a job/trade etc.
not to mention they would give their hardworking wives and parents a break!
