What Do You Do?
Every time someone asks me that question, “What do you do?” I wince and reply, “I’m still learning.”
Why do I wince? Somehow, I feel that my response leaves the impression that I am unfinished, or incomplete. The truth is that most people feel somewhat uncomfortable answering that question, especially businessman with “investments”. But what is bothering me is deeper than that.
It is not C”V because I don’t like learning, or I feel that it is socially unacceptable. But rather, it gives the impression of me as someone who has yet to accomplish in the world.
Ask a Rebbe or anyone in “Chinuch” what they do, and you’ll get a mouthful and eager reply. Ask a fundraiser for a yeshiva or mossad and they’ll be happy to tell you. But ask a kollel yungerman, and you will likely get a tepid, cold, muttered response.
Like somehow, being in Kollel means that you have yet to find yourself…
